Ostivone®

We prefer this brand because…...

“Ostivone®” is a very reliable source of ipriflavone, with which we have seen consistently good results over years for helping to improve bone density with our patients. It contains a rich dose of ipriflavone, a well-tested food derivative. Clinical studies have shown that “Ostivone®” can both maximize new bone formation while minimizing bone loss. We like knowing the long track record of consistent manufacture: since 1997 “Ostivone®” has been made byTechnical Sourcing International, Inc. who maintain high purity and in-house quality control testing, unlike some cheaper brands. The vegetarian capsule includes cellulose and magnesium which contribute to maximum absorption and effectiveness with the least potential for allergy, and offer a little extra bone density support. Our patients have been happy with their bone density results on “Ostivone®” and in many cases have chosen to continue taking it at a dose of 400-600mg. daily for years.

About ipriflavone

Ipriflavone is a naturally-occurring bioflavonoid, a kind of plant pigment, found in small amounts in leguminous plants such as alfalfa and soy. For therapeutic use it is manufactured from a soy extract, the isoflavone daidzein, but ipriflavone does not contain any residual soy. Its primary use is for preventing or treating postmenopausal and age-related osteopenia or osteoporosis: most studies have shown bone density improvements of 2-6% in six to twelve months and continued increases over the longer term, though a few trials found no benefit. It can improve or maintain both trabecular bone, as in the spine, and cortical bone in the wrist, both areas vulnerable to fracture. Ipriflavone is also used for preventing drug-induced osteoporosis such as with steroid or Lupron use, relieving osteoporotic bone pain, treating Paget’s bone disease and renal osteodystrophy, for reducing bone loss in immobile stroke patients, and bodybuilders use it as a strengthening agent.

Ipriflavone was discovered in the 1930s and investigated in over 150 human and laboratory studies in Japan, Italy and Hungary for on its bone supporting benefits and exceptional safety. Research on ipriflavone has been presented at the American Society of Bone Mineral Research in St. Louis and Toronto, with more than sixty double-blind human clinical trials confirming its effects with long-term use. Some studies showed that ipriflavone can promote new bone development even in the absence of calcium, so it acts independently as a bone builder. It can slow bone loss, and even better can also increase bone density even in patients with confirmed osteoporosis.

Ipriflavone works by activating osteoblasts, the bone-building cells that form new bone from cartilage tissue, and that repair bone and move calcium from the bloodstream to be deposited into bone structure. It also slows down osteoclasts, the cells that naturally break down and remove bone. Ipriflavone also seems to enhance the effect of calcitonin, a hormone produced in the parafollicular thyroid cells that reduces calcium removal from bone. Ipriflavone or its metabolite 7-hydroxy-isoflavone, may inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes CYP1A2 and CYP2C9. Unlike soy isoflavones which we do not recommend, ipriflavone has no direct estrogen-like action on breast or uterus tissue, but it may enhance the bone-building effects of estrogen. Clinical evidence suggests that for women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, taking ipriflavone in combination with estrogen (our preference is always a bio-identical estrogen blend) might allow for use of a lower estrogen dose

Cautions

Always take natural remedies under the supervision of your health care provider. Do not use 'Ostivone' without the advice of your healthcare professional if you are taking medicines broken down by the liver, including amitriptyline, diazepam, diclofenac, ibuprofen, irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), phenytoin, piroxicam (Feldene), warfarin (Coumadin), and others: Ipriflavone might slow the liver's breakdown of these drugs, and increase their effects. If you have a weak immune system, check with your healthcare provider before starting ipriflavone. One study in 2001 found reduced lymphocyte white blood cells in the ipriflavone group: this problem has not been detected again, but we recommend a blood cell count (CBC) every four to six months for patients taking ipriflavone. Lymphocyte counts seem to normalize in most patients within a year after discontinuing ipriflavone. This is especially concerning in people who have a weak immune system due to AIDS, drugs used to prevent organ rejection after transplant, or chemotherapy. Do not use 'NAC' during pregnancy or nursing unless under the guidance of your physician, there is insufficient data about safety during pregnancy.
