Cal Citrate

We prefer this brand because…...

For people who cannot tolerate magnesium, and have sensitive digestion, this pure calcium is excellent. We prefer calcium in an ionized soluble form, attached to a chelate that is naturally found in the body's energy producing Krebs cycle: the body readily “recognizes” these molecules, and can also use the Krebs chelates for energy. Calcium in the soluble chelate form is up to five times better absorbed, especially for people with impaired stomach acid, than calcium carbonate, which is chalk as used on blackboards! Of all natural chelates, citrate is the one that actually deters kidney stone formation. We avoid calcium in dolomite, oyster shell or bone meal formulas as they have been reported to at times contain unacceptable levels of lead. Bone meal also contains phosphorus: the human body maintains a tight balance between calcium and phosphorus, and if extra phosphorous is detected in the bloodstream parathyroid hormone will draw calcium off our bones into the blood to balance the phosphorus, countering the bone-support we want! We have also seen that calcium citrate is less likely to cause constipation than carbonate.

About calcium

Calcium is the most plentiful mineral in the body, it constitutes about 2% of our total weight, and 99% of it is in our bones. It is crucial for bone and tooth architecture; and also for muscle contraction, heartbeat, blood clotting, and for many important enzymes. Our bones require about 800mg. per day. Calcium is a nutrient of which we need just the right amount, not too little, and not too much. But in recent decades the standard recommendations went as high as 1,500mg: excess calcium carries risks of kidney stones and deposition in soft tissues including arteries, raising the chance of cardiovascular disease; in tendons, ligaments and connective tissue risking calcific tendonitis; and in breast tissue where it may possibly be linked with abnormal cell changes. So we have always strongly recommended for our clinic patients to take about 800mg daily, either in their diet or with supplements in absorbable forms. For osteoporosis, calcium can at least slow bone loss, and with other hormonal support it is can participate in rebuilding new bone. Calcium may also help reduce blood pressure, and numerous studies have shown calcium's benefit for PMS.

Cautions

Always take natural remedies under the supervision of your health care provider. Do not use calcium without the advice of your healthcare professional if you have a history of kidney stones, or soft tissue calcification. Do not take calcium within three hours of thyroid medicines or tetracycline antibiotics, as it can slow their absorption. Calcium can interfere with the action of diltiazem and sotalol, and reduce the efficacy of verapamil. Additional calcium may be needed during pregnancy and during lactation: follow the guidance of your physician.
